How to Determine Your Body Type

identiify your body shape

How many times have you seen an article of clothing or an entire outfit on someone and said, “I want that!”? Then you try on the outfit only to find yourself disappointed. In order to achieve the look you desire, you must determine what your body type (shape) is.  There are six different body types (shapes): Hourglass, Figure Eight, Rectangle, Triangle, Apple and Inverted Triangle.

Once you’ve determined which body type (shape) you are, then you’ll be able to make a more informed decision when buying clothes. In order to determine your shape, you must start by taking your measurements. These measurements must be accurate to look your best; so, grab the measuring tape and ask a friend to lend a hand.

First, measure your shoulders. When measuring your shoulders, place the measuring tape at the tip of one shoulder and wrap it around until it meets back at the starting point. This is the widest width of your shoulders.

Next, measure your bust. Make sure you are standing up straight and wrap the measuring tape around your back and the fullest part of your breast. Make sure the measuring tape is tight without changing the shape of your breast (i.e. smashing, squeezing or squishing).

Next, measure your waist. Wrap the measuring tape around your natural waist located right above your belly button.

Finally, measure your hips. Place the measuring tape at the fullest part of your hip, keep it flat, and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your butt, your other hip and bring it back to the starting point.

After recording these numbers, you are now able to determine your body type (shape). Over the course of the next few weeks, I’ll be discussing the different body shapes and how to dress each one.

Stay tuned…….
